Desde antes del primer llanto, Ella ya estaba. Awicha: la que lleva a los suyos pegados al pecho, donde el shungo (corazón) late más fuerte, donde el frío no entra. Sus brazos recuerdan cada peso que cargaron, cada fiebre, cada miedo, cada hijo que se fue y cada nieto que llegó. Ella no protege porque puede, protege porque ES.
Before the first cry, She was already there. Awicha: the one who carries her own pressed to her chest, where the shungo (heart) beats strongest, where the cold cannot enter. Her arms remember every weight they carried, every fever, every fear, every child who left and every grandchild who arrived. She does not protect because she can. She protects because she IS.

Magy Peña
Magy Peña es una artista visual ecuatoriana radicada en Cuenca, con más de tres décadas dedicadas a la escultura contemporánea, el arte textil y el ensamblaje de materiales reutilizados. Su obra se ha expuesto en el CIDAP, el Museo de Arte Moderno de Cuenca, la Casa de Cuenca en Quito, la Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja y la Alianza Francesa de Guayaquil.
En la serie Awichas, Magy modela en arcilla el rostro de las abuelas andinas y las viste con textiles, fibras y cuentas. Cada Awicha carga a su guagua cerca del corazón, como un homenaje a la ternura de nuestras abuelas.
Magy Peña is an Ecuadorian visual artist based in Cuenca, with more than three decades devoted to contemporary sculpture, textile art, and the assemblage of reclaimed materials. Her work has been exhibited at CIDAP, the Museum of Modern Art of Cuenca, Casa de Cuenca in Quito, the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, and the Alliance Française of Guayaquil.
In the Awichas series, Magy shapes the faces of Andean grandmothers in clay and dresses them in textiles, fibers, and beads. Each Awicha carries her guagua (baby) close to her heart, as a tribute to the tenderness of our grandmothers.

En la cultura Cañari y otros pueblos andinos del sur del Ecuador, la Awicha (abuela) es la guardiana de la memoria: hereda el tejido, las plantas medicinales y los relatos que dan identidad al pueblo. Encarna la ternura que protege y la autoridad que sostiene a la familia. Es la biblioteca viva de su comunidad.
In Cañari culture and other Andean peoples of southern Ecuador, the Awicha (grandmother) is the guardian of memory: she passes down weaving, medicinal plants, and the stories that give the people their identity. She embodies protective tenderness and the authority that holds the family together. She is the living library of her community.
